About Me

Hi, I'm Michael, a specialist in controlled clinical vocabularies with near 20 years’ experience in health classification, terminology, and information standards. 

I set up this site as a repository for my writing and other work on health informatics topics, such as clinical coding and terminology science.

My professional background includes roles in the UK's National Health Service as a clinical coding auditor and data assurance specialist. These provided me with extensive knowledge of structured data produced and used by hospitals and the wider health service.

From 2016 to 2023, I served as Associate Director of Education at IHRIM, and managed the UK's National Clinical Coding Qualification. I have also been an advisor to the Royal College of Physicians and the Professional Record Standards Body on matters of coding and classification. I currently guest lecture at the University of Liverpool's Institute of Population Health.

In 2023, I joined SNOMED International as a map specialist and terminology author. My work is focused on semantic interoperability and terminology integration to enhance global clinical data quality and promote the meaningful use of our health information.

In June 2026 I rejoined IHRIM as its CEO.
